Marine Autonomous Systems (MAS) Project Update at Oceanology International 2016

Marine Autonomous Systems (MAS) Project Update at Oceanology International 2016…

With the first phase of the project complete, today sees the official release of the pressure test results from NOC in Southampton. Using the test facilities at the NOC, Li-S cells underwent multiple pressure, temperature and discharge cycles equivalent to undersea depths of 6,000m.

To receive this update and future battery development updates please register your details HERE today.

Project Overview
In October 2015 a consortium of UK companies and academic partners, led by Steatite began an R&D project to develop a battery pack that will be pressure tolerant up to depths of 6000 metres.
Due for completion in October 2017, the project is looking to exploit the inherent benefits of Lithium-Sulfur battery technology. This presents some major advances for Marine Autonomous Systems looking to improve on neutral buoyancy, higher levels of safety and higher energy densities, delivering greater speeds, endurance and payloads.

Advancing Deep Sea operations for Unmanned Vehicles at Oceanology International 2016

A Steatite led consortium have been selected to present a paper on pressure tolerant Lithium Batteries for Maritime Autonomous Systems (MAS) at Oceanology International 2016, in London.

Roland Rogers, Maritime Sector Lead for the National Oceanography Centre, will be delivering the presentation during the Conference on the 17th March, the second day of the Unmanned Vehicles and Vessels Showcase organised with the Society for Underwater Technology (SUT).

This Steatite led consortium with OXIS Energy, National Oceanography Centre and MSubs together with Collaborative R&D funding from Innovate UK are working on a two year development project to  develop the next generation of pressure tolerant Lithium Batteries for Maritime Autonomous Systems (MAS).

The project’s aim is the development of a pressure tolerant rechargeable battery based upon new, innovative Lithium Sulfur (Li-S) chemistry for use in MAS. Li-S cells have five times the theoretical specific energy of lithium ion cells, but as yet have not been used in underwater applications. The programme is designed to achieve greater performance characteristics using Li-S by integrating and testing the cells and a battery management system on MAS platforms in deep-sea applications.

One of the projects objectives is to reduce weight and increase energy for MAS providing improvements in operational efficiency resulting in fewer launches and recoveries. The decrease in weight will allow for greater payloads or provide vessels with an increased runtime, allowing vessels to run longer and further during missions. The battery packs will also be easier to handle due to weight saving. The chemistry is also much safer than existing solutions and able to withstand short-circuiting and even puncturing, decreasing the risk whilst out at sea.

Steatite Antennas a UK designer and manufacturer of test and measurement antennas launches two new EMC horn antennas suitable for EMC testing and general measurement applications.

Steatite is pleased to be able to provide a 2 to 18 GHz dual linearly polarised open boundary quad-ridged wideband horn antenna in a compact package. The QWH-DL-2-18-S-SG offers polarisation diversity and the ability to measure two orthogonally polarised fields simultaneously. In the test environment, the antenna allows polarisations to be remotely changed without physically rotating the antenna. The antenna provides isolation of >30 dB between connectors and gain 3.9 to 15.9 dBi.

To complement the open boundary antenna, is a high power 0.8 to 18 GHz linearly polarised dual-ridged horn antenna providing maximum 500 Watt c.w. and gain between 2.8 and 18 dBi. Suitable for EMC radiation and immunity testing. Part number: QWH-SL-08.-18-N-SG comes with an N type connector and choice of mounting options.

Steatite Antennas has a significant portfolio of single and dual polarised multi-octave standard and high gain antennas providing consistent and reliable performance. The Company also supplies specialised HiRF Antennas operating over the frequency range 0.4 to 18 GHz, and two of its established antennas are Ford Motor Company recognised.
